Pallas Athene Books

Pallas Athene has been publishing attractive, intelligent non-fiction for over 25 years. We mainly focus on art, particularly painting, but also publish books about travel, history, literature, nature and food.

John Ruskin is a particular interest, as are Venice and Rome. We also publish the richly illustrated series Lives of the Artists, bringing together accounts of great artists written by their contemporaries.

Our current book on showcase is Neighbours and Rivals: An Eighteenth-Century Journey Between Paris and London. The first work of great French journalist Louis-Sébastien Mercier, this seminal work of travel writing remained unpublished for over 200 years. An exemplar of a new form of journalistic, reflective literature, Mercier presented emotive representations of the city as collections of experiences, habits and personalities. His version of London is a projection of his philosophical imagination – not simply a rounded portrait but also a reflection of what he hoped Paris could become. Simon Jenkins has described this wonderful book as ‘an absolute treasure!’
