In the spirit of An Hour From Paris, here is a guide that will help you experience Paris like a Parisian.

Bill Gillham, author, academic and teacher, has been visit- ing Paris for decades. For him, the pleasure is not in revisiting the tourist sights; what he enjoys is to immerse himself in a particular quartier, discovering its little shops and bistrots, its markets, parks, and local entertainments, all the little quirks and particularities of its day to day life. In this guide, he takes you to seventeen of his favourite areas of Paris – some central, some suburban, mostly just off the beaten track – and shows you how to discover the real city. Neglected, or completely ignored, by ordinary guidebooks, these quartiers all have a purely individual, Parisian character; and as well as being fascinating destinations in themselves, they make superb bases for traditional sightseeing, and in particular an ideal way of seeing Paris with children.

All the information about where to stay, how to get about, where to shop and eat, museums, parks, playgrounds, what not to miss, what to avoid – is given in a prose that easily conveys all the enjoyment of discovery. Scores of idiosyncratic photographs give a hint of the pleasures to be gleaned.

Bill Gillham first went to Paris over fifty years ago, as a schoolboy: the beginning of a life-long love affair. An academic and child psychologist, he has written almost a hundred books, two-thirds of them for children, and ranging from research methods, texts for postgraduates, to one-liners for two-year olds. Speaking fluent French, he has visited Paris several times a year since the 1950s. The present book is the result.
